GDB | Why and How to Promote China-Africa Agri-food Trade from the SPS Perspective

  African countries and China share strong political ties and fast-growing economic cooperation. However, the potential in the economic sphere, including in trade, is far from being fully tapped. Politicians in African countries should raise the profile of SPS issues and put them into the agenda of top leaders. Competent authorities and industrial associations in Africa should strengthen their exchanges with Chinese counterparts, promoting the recognition of measures that can achieve equivalent safety outcomes and the permission of imports from distinct regions in an exporting country when presented with evidence of the absence or low incidence of pests and diseases. With determined efforts from all stakeholders and necessary flexibility, agri-food could serve as another powerful engine for China-Africa trade.
