Workshop on Global Development 2

Development is a common goal around the globe, diverse in practices and beliefs about appropriate philosophies and policy choice. Studies of development – defined here as progress in wellbeing measured in economic, societal and ecological terms – are interdisciplinary by nature and require continued exchange of experiences and insights from around the world.

The Global Development Workshop offers a platform for speakers to share their insights from practice and research finding without prejudice to a particular theoretical conviction. Each workshop features a particular theme but together they help to foster an epistemic community between China and the rest of the world.

“South-South Cooperation from the Perspective of New Development Economics Theory”

20:00-21:30, March 15, Tuesday, 2022

Zoom ID:986 6701 0463;  Code:741852

South-South cooperation emerged in the 1950s first as an expression of political solidarity among Asian and African countries in opposition to vestiges in international economic system in the colonial era. Over the decades, the movement had a noticeable impact on shaping the postwar evolution of international financial and development structures, albeit continuation of dominance in notions of liberalism that are more rooted in experiences of industrialized economies. Today, South-South cooperation is a major force to reckon with in the continuous debates on world development paradigms.

How can the field of economic theory better account for the durability of the South-South cooperation? What issues should students of development economics pay particular attention to for the sake of making South-South cooperation more conducive to the search for stability, sustainability and competitiveness in the global economic system today and into the future?
